I think everyone has seen the "memes" or heard a tragic story about flying Spirit Airlines. So the question it poses is... is Spirit Airlines THAT BAD? What many people already know is Spirit Airlines provide some of the best rates on flights domestically and internationally. But the question is... are the savings worth it?
I traveled on Spirit Airlines for the first time on July 4, 2018 from Atlanta, GA to Atlantic City, NJ. What prompted me to travel to Atlantic City was my mother and I had returned from St. Lucia exactly a month prior and all of my aunts had been on vacation leaving my grandmother feeling left out. My mother and I decided to surprise her with a trip! We chose Atlantic City because she is a casino gal and Atlantic City is known for their Casinos!
I quickly noticed when I looked to purchase our flights that Spirit Airlines is the only airline that flies into Atlantic City so it was settled that we were flying on Spirit. The total for my mothers, grandmother and myself flights airfare was 403.20. We purchased a "bare fare" flight... in laimes terms the cheapest rate for the flight!
My grandmother is older so we had to add handicap assistance to her flight to help us get through Atlanta's hectic airport. When I travelled to St. Lucia a month prior, my mothers foot was sprained so we attempted to us Handicap assistance. Unfortunately, the airline that we were flying had a wait time of an hour for wheel chair assistance. Needless to say, we were impressed with the promptness of the handicap assistance Spirit Airlines provided.
So the baggage policy! I know that's why you're here LOL. The baggage policy is definitely the worst part of flying Spirit Airlines but it is not as bad as you may think. With your "Bare Fare" flight you are allowed one personal bag. Examples of personal bags are: tote bags, laptop bags, bookbags, drawstring bags, big purses, etc. We only stayed in Atlantic City for two days so we all found our larges tote bags and stuffed them with all of our items! If you are travelling for an extended trip a carry on bag starts at about 30.00 I believe. Although, you have to pay for the bag... I often notice when booking travel for my clients it's still less than other airlines.
Once on the airplane the first thing we noticed was how large the aisles were! I don't know if you're like me but i'm a hot mess trying to get all of my bags, plus my new things I've bought on vacation down the aisle so it was a relief to get on such a spacious plane. The seats were a little uncomfortable and it doesn't allow you to recline them. Unfortunately they don't give me my infamous Biscoff cookies, you have to purchase snacks... but let me tell you they have some really good snack options! I paid 13.00 for Goldfish, Oreo's and a diet coke... not too bad. The pilot on our flight was extremely nice! He assisted my grandmother on and off the flight which was impressive to me. One thing I didn't like was there was no wifi on the plane but they explained they would be having wifi before 2019!
All in all! On a scale of 1-10 i'd probably rate Spirit a 8.0 I will definitely fly Spirit again. The flight was smoothed and I made it safely to tell you all about it.
