So first off I want to introduce myself, my name is Ke’Auija but I go by Ke and I left the States January of 2018 to become a world traveler and teach during my two gap years before medical school. The first country I knew I wanted to go to was Thailand because I was fascinated by the whole country y’all it is BEAUTIFUL. Like it reminds you a lot of Miami but it is different at the same time. While travelling to Thailand I actually got stuck in Malaysia …long story. But after a few months I went back to Malaysia to fully enjoy. In addition to Thailand and Malaysia, I have been to Vietnam which gave me mixed feelings but we will get into that in a future blog post (stay tuned), and lastly the fourth country I've visited was China, which is where I am currently residing.
I stayed in Thailand for five and a half months, I seriously felt like I became a local! For example, I went through a million trials and tribulations in that country due to personal issues but the beauty of the country persisted. The first place I stayed at in Thailand was on the island of Koh Samui and this island was beautiful, I stayed here a whole month while I took my TEFL.
Be prepared for the islands in Thailand to be rural. As a city girl there was adjusting but you can expect that moving anywhere, especially to another country. In order to get around you have to take a truck "tuk tuk" (an outside cab or truck) every place and that got tiring. I stayed at a beach hotel so I was directly on Choeng Mon beach. Choeng Mon beach is more of an adult/ retirement beach because when the sun goes down there is literally nobody on the beach so it is definitely not like a South Beach type of thing. If you come to Thailand to relax definitely come to this beach but if you are trying to party don’t - you will be disappointed! If you are looking to turn up it is best for you to stay at the beach that Arkbar is located on. I loved Arkbar and they stay open all night, lit times.
ALSO one thing of advice don’t let Thai people con you out of money, HAGGLE, it don’t sound right take your money elsewhere! Every dollar = 30 baht which means our currency is worth a lot there so you can definitely get past the bang for your buck. Also don’t take pictures with any animals because people will try to play you lmaooooo. They are real finessers out there we but at least on our side of the earth we know finese as well - so keep your gaurd up. There was a Family Mart and & 7-Eleven (we have them all throughout Florida so I felt like I was at home for a bit but they don’t have slushies so it not that much like home). They have plays where you can elephant trek (I overly love Elephants so I didn’t). They also have elephant sanctuaries- they say the best are in Chang Mai and I did not get to make it to one but my friend said that it was amazing.
There is so many places you can tour. You can go talk to a Monk which can really be so peaceful -it opens your eyes and is just relaxing and worth it. Also during my time in Thailand I stayed in Bangkok most of the time I was there I love love love Bangkok. Bangkok is definitely just like a major city in the states! Fresh fruit stands everywhere as well, the metro is very clutch as well and they have an Uber system called Grab which is very cheap. A lot of people there wanted to know a lot of about me because it is sad that many of them still believed after all this time that only black people come from Africa. Just have an open mind when visiting this country and do air bnb’s as well or hotels hostels are cool but you get more doing those two or resorts.
